The Olympic Natural Resources Center welcomes you to its next Evening Talks at ONRC program.
TOPIC Orcas, Humans and Salmon: Shared Destinies in the Pacific Northwest
DATE/TIME Thursday, December 12, 2013 – 6:30 to 8:00 PM
PRESENTER Rich Osborne, Ph. D. – ONRC Research Consultant and Neutral Forum Facilitator
BRING Your favorite snack food to share
LOCATION ONRC, 1455 S. Forks Avenue, Forks
Rich Osborne will present an illustrated lecture on the interdependence of salmon, orcas and people of the Pacific Northwest from prehistoric times into the present. Drawing on over three decades of orca research while affiliated with The Whale Museum and the University of Washington Friday Harbor Labs, Dr. Osborne will highlight the challenges salmon-feeding orcas are facing in the delicate balance for access to the limited salmon resources it shares with people. Key questions addressed in the talk are whether the scarcity of the orcas favorite prey, Chinook salmon, is already influencing the decline of this endangered population, and whether the orcas will shift their preference to other prey if salmon stocks decline further.
Everyone is welcome. Topic is appropriate for learners of all ages. Please feel free to forward this invitation to others who might be interested in this topic.
