Princess Angeline, a documentary by Makah Tribal member and Seattle-based filmmaker, Sandra Johnson Osawa, will be screened at the Forks campus of Peninsula College on Friday, May 3rd at 7pm. Osawa’s video explores the story of Princess Angeline, the daughter of Chief Seattle and one of the few Duwamish people left in Seattle by the 1890′s.
This screening is free and open to the public.

May4Astronomy Program hosted by ONRC “Family Program” @ Olympic Natural Resources CenterSaturday: 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
The Olympic Natural Resources Center invites the community to an interactive, engaging program on astronomy. University of Washington undergraduate and graduate students from the Department of Astronomy will lead science-based experiences to discover more about the skies above us. They are bringing their mobile planetarium that provides a close up view of the sky at night.
Two programs will be held on Saturday, May 4th. A family-focused program will be held 1:00 to 3:00 PM with an evening program for adults from 7:00 to 9:00 PM. The ONRC is located at 1455 S. Forks Avenue, Forks. For additional information, contact Ellen Matheny.
The planetarium shows are about 20 minutes long so groups of people can cycle through the performances (or come back in for a repeat viewing!). In addition to the planetarium show, each program will have several stations with hands-on activities. The afternoon session will include kid-focused presentations and activities, while the evening session will include more in-depth presentations.
The presenters are UW students who volunteer their time to do these programs.
“People really like [the mobile planetarium]; they’ve got great questions,” said Phil Rosenfield, the principal investigator of this project. “You get some gasps because people have never really seen the night sky like that before,” Rosenfield said.
The planetarium’s dome, created by the company Go-Dome, is an inflatable room resembling an igloo. At approximately 10 feet high and 20 feet across, the dome can fit approximately 25 people. It is a fully functional planetarium that offers many of the same images as the high-tech planetarium located at the UW. The planetarium runs Microsoft Research’s World Wide Telescope software on a laptop computer. A large hemispherical mirror projects the high density image from the back of the dome across three-quarters of its interior.
The planetarium brings modern astronomy down from space and into the schools and community, providing viewers an immersive experience of the Universe.

Native youth, young adults, educators, elders, and leaders from tribal nations located on the Olympic Peninsula are invited to ONRC for a fun-filled and experiential day of learning about the opportunities and adventures that await students who attend the University of Washington. The presenters, from the Office of Minority Affairs and Diversity, will provide information on applying to the UW and on resources available to native students on campus. Several representatives from UW departments will meet with the students to help them better understand these academic majors and associated career paths. Peninsula College will also present information about its degree programs and the process for transferring to a 4-year university.

Our first day is Saturday, May 18, 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, in our beautiful, park-like location south of the Forks Timber Museum, 1421 S Forks Ave, across from the airport (on Hwy 101 at the south end of town). We will be open every Saturday until October 5.
In addition to our regular artisans, crafters, and vendors, we will be hosting Swap Meet days on the first and third Saturdays of June, July, August, and September. There will be a wide variety of items to browse through, changing each Saturday.
Are you a crafter or artisan? Do you have items to sell? We are still only charging $5 per space each day, collected near the end of the day. You can be there one day, once a month, or the whole summer. If you have questions, you can call Corinne at 374-6332, or come to the market and ask. Come to see, come to sell, come to buy!
