The Month of Creativity @ NOLS: The Forks Branch Library
Feb 17 @ 12:00 pm – 4:00 pm

The Month of Creativity (January) has ended and it is time to show off the works of art that  were created in those first 31 days of the year. Bring your projects to the library at noon on Saturday, February 17th. Artists and art aficionados will  gather from noon to 4pm in an informal, friendly space by the fireplace. There will be refreshments, stimulating conversation and interesting company. The Month of Creativity is also called Fun A Day and the fun continues this Saturday.  You are welcome to bring your knitting, your basketry or whatever handwork you enjoy as well. You might find a great idea for your next project.

Reece and Coles Sportsmans Club Trophy Event

Reece and Cole’s Sportsmans Club Trophy Event

For our senior project we have decided to put on a trophy display show. The main goal for our event is to bring recognition to locally as well as out of state trophies and hunters. We also are doing a membership drive for our local West End Sportsman Club.

Both of us are avid hunters. The membership drive really is the most important aspect of this project because this is where we got our start to hunting. Whether it was at the range or taking hunters safety courses. Our home town sportsmans club played a huge role in our development as outdoorsmen.

  • All mounts are welcome (big game, small game, fish and waterfowl)
  • Also welcome our European skulls, horns and sheds
  • Official scorer will be on hand to score trophies
  • We would appreciate it if you would pre-register your mount(s)
  • Early set up March 2nd from 6pm-9pm please bring your mounts between these times if possible
  • All Participants will be entered in a drawing to win prizes

Lunch: BBQ pulled pork sandwiches, pop or water available for $5.00 (served 12pm-2pm)

A Blacktail mount (in picture above) will be on display along with a 400inch Bull Elk and a 200 inch Mule Deer

The Science Saturday Book Discussion Group

Inspire your inner scientist at the Forks Branch Library’s Science Saturday Book Discussion Group! Read, explore, and discuss a broad range of popular science-themed titles. No reservations are needed and you may attend as often as you wish.

The Science Saturday Book Discussion Group meets at the Forks Branch Library of the North Olympic Library System (NOLS) every first Saturday of the month at 12pm.

On Saturday, March 3, the group will meet to discuss The Soul of an Octopus: A Surprising Exploration Into the Wonder of Consciousness by Sy Montgomery. Montgomery explores the emotional and physical world of the octopus – a surprisingly complex, intelligent, and spirited creature – and the remarkable connections it makes with humans. Montgomery chronicles this growing appreciation of the octopus, but also tells a love story. Funny, entertaining, touching, and profound, The Soul of an Octopus reveals what octopuses can teach us about consciousness and the meeting of two very different minds.

Copies of The Soul of an Octopus are available in various formats including regular print, large print, audio-book on CD and downloadable eBook, which may be requested online by visiting the library catalog at www.nols.org.  A limited number of copies of each book discussion selection are available at the Library the month prior to each meeting. To view a complete list of the 2018 selections, visit www.nols.org/book-discussion-groups.

On Saturday, April 7, the group will meet to discuss First Bite by Bee Wilson. What are the origins of taste? In First Bite, beloved food writer Bee Wilson draws from the latest research from food psychologists, neuroscientists, and nutritionists to reveal that our food habits are shaped by a whole host of factors, including family, culture, memory, gender, hunger, and love. An exploration of the extraordinary and surprising origins of our tastes and eating habits—from people who can only eat foods of a certain color to an amnesiac who can eat meal after meal without getting full.
