Department of Fish and Wildlife, Management of the State’s Salmon and Steelhead Fishing Guide Industry

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife has scheduled a public meeting on the management of the state’s salmon and steelhead fishing guide industry in Forks on Wednesday.

The meeting will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Rainforest Arts Center, 35 N. Forks Ave.

Fish and Wildlife representatives will discuss current management and take suggestions for potential regulatory changes for the fishing guide industry.

During the 2017 legislative session, the Legislature directed Fish and Wildlife to hold meetings to explore alternative structures for guide licensing.

The states objectives are, according to Fish and Wildlife, to improve the fishing experience and ensure equitable opportunity for both guided and non-guided river anglers, manage fishing pressure to protect wild steelhead and other species, and ensure that recreational fish guiding remains a sustainable economic contributor to rural economies.

Fish and Wildlife also is working with a contractor to develop and conduct a survey to capture feedback from those who cannot attend a meeting in person.

The department will provide a summary of its findings to the Legislature by the end of the year.

Lawmakers to host town hall @ Rainforest Arts Center

 Lawmakers to host town hall

OLYMPIA — All three lawmakers who represent the 24th Legislative District are joining together to host a town hall meeting in Forks on March 22.

“This is a great opportunity to inform people about what happened during this year’s legislative session when it comes to creating jobs, improving health care and fully funding our public schools,” said Rep. Steve Tharinger, D-Sequim, who represents the district with Rep. Mike Chapman, D-Port Angeles, and Sen. Kevin Van De Wege, D-Sequim.

“It’s also an opportunity to hear your stories, your ideas and your comments,” Tharinger said.

The Forks town hall will be from noon to 1 p.m. at the Rainforest Art Center, 35 N. Forks Ave.

The 24th District covers Clallam and Jefferson counties and part of Grays Harbor County.

“There’s nothing like hearing directly from the folks you represent, face to face,” said Van De Wege. “Our district is one of the biggest in the state, so these town halls are a chance to get out and hear what people think.”

Chapman said he’s excited to update constituents on legislation and funding to help create rural jobs in timber and farm country, an effort he led in the House and Van De Wege led in the Senate.

“We’re blessed to live in one of the most beautiful areas on the planet,” Chapman said. “The challenge facing our families and local businesses is how to provide more opportunities and economic development, so that our sons and daughters can find work locally and raise their own families in the communities they love.”

There are no steps to learn, so don’t worry about being inexperienced. Every dance is taught before the music begins, and the caller will give you verbal instruction throughout each dance. The majority of dancers will be new to contra dance. Come on down for a fun time. This is a great way to meet people, visit with friends, and have a lot of fun while getting exercise and listening to good music.  Please join us.  Non-dancers are also welcome, and seating is available for those who want to just watch and listen.
